Newt Gingrich once gave advice on how a president can get things done, and it’s equally applicable to coaches and online entrepreneurs.
He said that the president has to be a lion, and lions can’t hunt chipmunks, because even if they catch them they’ll starve to death.
Lions have to hunt big animals – like antelope – to survive (he used the example of Ronald Reagan focusing on defeating the Soviet Union, growing the US economy, and reviving the American spirit).
He wrote:
“Every time a chipmunk ran into his office, President Reagan would listen patiently, and then say, ‘Have you met my chief of staff?’ That’s how Jim Baker amassed the largest chipmunk collection in the world”
A lot of coaches are spending their days scurrying after chipmunks: the “freeple” and “cheaple” who don’t want to pay them for their services, or arguing the time-wasting political debates that won’t move the needle for their businesses.
What are the antelopes that you should be going after?
I can’t answer that, only you can. But once you determine what they are, you have to be ruthless and put all of your energy towards them.
Little chipmunks will be nipping at your heels all day long. You may not have a chief of staff at your beck and call to chase them away, but don’t waste your time on them.
