I recently put a poll up in my Facebook group asking members who they would rather have as a mentor: Gary Vaynerchuk or Tim Ferriss.
Fight! Fight! Fight!
After hundreds of votes, Ferris beat Gary Vee by about 55% to 45% (a lot of people abstained and commented that neither of them floated their boat).
Since the poll generated so much discussion, here’s my two cents on it:
I’d go with Vaynerchuk.
I’m not suggesting that he’s perfect. The whole “hustle 20 hours a day to go after your goals” could very well lead to burnout.
But I lean closer to that than the people who dream of automating everything and working just a few hours a week while they dip their toes in the warm sand and drink girly drinks (while refreshing their bank balance on their phones).
There’s no way around it. You have to work hard to build a successful business – especially in the first few years.
No doubt that Tim Ferriss is a smart guy, but a lot of “get rich quick” people have jumped on his four-hour workweek message and I don’t want to be in their camp.
Besides, I’d ask why you’d only want to work four hours a week if you enjoy what you’re doing? I’d go crazy with that much time off …
It’d be nice to combine the best of Gary and Tim, but since we can’t my vote is with Gary Vee.
As I’m filling my next group program, which starts in May, I’m looking for people like Vaynerchuk who understand that it takes hard work to get a business going.
