Getting Feedback From the Flat-Earthers

by | Jun 22, 2016 | Blog

Overall, I’m a fan of getting feedback from others.

It’s good to hear opinions other than your own, and open up your thinking on whatever issue is on your mind.

But I’ve got some issues with feedback …

There’s good feedback, and then there’s bad feedback!

For example, getting feedback on growing your business from your Uncle Jim, who has never run a business in his life, could be dangerous.

Regardless of the question put out in a public forum, some people always seem to have a dissenting voice.

You could ask if people think that the sky is blue, and someone will passionately argue that it’s not.

I’ve seen people knocked-off course by some off-base comment from someone. They get 80% or 90% of people telling them one thing, and then suddenly Uncle Jim chimes in with his brilliant business mind and muddies the waters.

You have to be able to decide on the good feedback and the back feedback. Remember that if you hear from 100 people, you’ll never get consistent feedback from everyone.

I was listening to the Skeptoid podcast recently, and it was an episode about the Flat Earth Society. There are people in the world who passionately believe that the Earth isn’t round. They think that it’s flat and there is a massive global conspiracy to cover-up the truth …

So if 1% or 2% of the population thinks the world is flat, what are the chances that you’ll get everyone to agree on your choice of logo, your sales page, your email strategy, your webinar title, or anything else?

(Spoiler alert: you have no chance of 100% consensus.)

Keep your ears open, pay attention to the good feedback and learn to filter out the garbage.
