I get asked about Facebook fan pages a lot.
If I had a dollar every time someone asked me for my opinion on them, well … I’d be on a beach somewhere dipping my toes in the hot sand with a girly drink in hand (yes, I drink girly drinks sometimes and get teased mercilessly by my friends for it.)
I think you should have a Facebook fan page, but I don’t think they’re the best way to spend your time on FB.
I much prefer Facebook groups to grow your business.
I have about 5000 “likes” on my two Facebook fan pages (my “Marc Mawhinney” one and my “Natural Born Coaches” page.) Yet when I post something on those pages, only a small percentage of my people even see it – under 10% (and sometimes just a few %.)
Unless I pay Facebook to boost those posts, not many eyeballs are seeing them.
Few eyeballs = little engagement.
But I get a TON of engagement on my personal profile (which has 5000 friends) and in my Facebook group (here’s the link if you want to check it out -> www.TheCoachingJungle.com)
So if I’m going to spend time on anything, where do you think I’ll be spending it?
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have a Facebook fan page, or stay active on it. I post on my fan pages once or twice a day, I just don’t put most of my energy there.
It’s important to have a fan page. If someone pops by and sees that you have just 14 fans, there could be a credibility issue.
It’s great if you have 1000 fans, but does it make a difference if you have 1000 or 2000? Probably not.
If you want to increase the number of fans that you have for your page, I do a “Fan Page Friday” every Friday on my Natural Born Coaches page. If you pop by and share your link on that thread, others will check it out and become fans.

(Note: I post the “Fan Page Friday” post on the page every Thursday around suppertime EST, since that’s Friday for my friends in places like Australia etc)
Don’t be a stranger, pop over and share your page. But don’t neglect the other places on Facebook where you could be getting better bang for your buck.
