HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

An 8 Sometimes Beats a 10

by | May 4, 2016 | Blog

We all know that 10 is better than 8 … isn’t it???

Not always, especially in the coaching world.

Let me explain.

One of the first questions that I ask new clients (1:1 or group ones), is: “Are you a perfectionist?”

Most clients will admit that they are, or that they at least have a “perfectionist streak” in them.

I then encourage them to get rid of that, ASAP!

Perfectionism kills.

It sounds extreme to say that, but I believe that it’s a major problem for people building coaching businesses.

Some people might say that “procrastination” is a bigger problem, but the two go hand-in-hand. People often don’t take action because they don’t feel that whatever they’re releasing out into the world is perfect.

Whenever I launch something – whether it was my podcast, the telesummit that I hosted last fall, my website, any online programs, etc – I don’t worry about it being a 10/10 right out of the gate.

I’ll take an 8/10 that’s live and out in the world, before being stuck in limbo shooting for that elusive, perfect 10/10. I’ll then improve it as time goes on.

When my podcast launched, it wasn’t a 10/10, it was probably a 7 or 8 at best (haters might say that it’s lower, even now!)

When I did my telesummit last fall, my goal was to just get it out of the gate. I didn’t try to get Oprah, Dr. Oz or Tony Robbins as guests (like others who I know were doing), and I didn’t set up elaborate affiliate programs like others were trying to do. It was an 8 … but some of those same people who were shooting for a 10 still haven’t done theirs, over 6 months later!

I launched my website a few years ago and wasn’t completely happy with it. I’m now in the process of revamping it and getting it closer to that magical 10/10 (ETA for the new site is this summer). But the big thing is my imperfect website went live back then, and it was instrumental to growing my coaching business over the years.

I’m not suggesting that you don’t strive to be the best that you can be. But the most frustrating place you can be in is to be stuck behind-the-scenes, spinning your tires and trying to make something perfect when it could be live and growing your business.

So I’ll ask you one question …

Are you a perfectionist?
