Over the last few days, I’ve been letting people know about a few openings that I have for calls to discuss their coaching businesses.
One person asked me “Is this a sales call?”
People are skeptical online nowadays, as they should be …
So I’ll take you behind-the-curtain and show you how I do these calls (there’s nothing mysterious about them):
They’re a maximum 30 minutes.
They’re not brain-picking sessions, or coaching sessions, but I ask questions to get a better sense of the person and their business. I will chime in from time to time with my two cents, and help any way that I can in our short time together.
They’re casual and informal. I hate scripted conversations, and I think people are sick and tired of them too.
(If you’ve been following my stuff for awhile, you know that I’m pretty candid and have a dry sense of humour)
If I decide from what I hear that I can help the person going forward, I ask them if they’d like to know how and I show them what that would look like.
If it doesn’t seem like we’re a match, or the person isn’t ready to do anything now, they’ve at least gotten value from the call and can go on their merry way (no hard feelings).
I don’t hound people or use a heavy arm-twisting style … I once had a client who previously dealt with a high-pressure closer from a well-known coach’s sales team. After trying every trick in the book (including asking her to max out her credit cards to buy the program and then surprise her husband with the vast riches she would make from it), she had to unplug her phone to escape his grasp.
It left a bad taste in her mouth, and I’m guessing she needed a shower after the call too.
I view my calls as seeing if we’re a fit to work together, but if not they’re still worth the time spent on it.
