There’s an old saying that “everyone’s favourite radio station is WiiFM”
WiiFM = “What’s In It For Me?” …
I agree.
Last week, I got stuck in Toronto before flying home from an event because of heavy winds back in New Brunswick.
It was midnight when they finally cancelled the flight, and I was told the earliest seat I could get back would be two days later.
Luckily, the woman working the counter at Air Canada was able to get me the last seat on a flight out the next morning.
At that moment, I wasn’t thinking about anything other than getting the earliest flight home and finding a hotel room that night.
WiiFM.
The next day, the plane encountered a lot of turbulence as we were landing.
We were rocking hard and whipping around.
My mind flashed back to the first episode of LOST, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t gripping the arm rest tightly and saying a few prayers in my head.
At the moment, I wasn’t thinking about anything other than landing safely on the ground in one piece.
WiiFM.
When I finally got home, I discovered that I was one of 90,000 customers without power in the province because of the storm.
Every 10 minutes, NB Power updated their website with the new numbers for how many outages there were.
I religiously checked that page every 10 minutes, watching as the numbers dropped little by little (and cursing why I still didn’t have my power back).
Once my power was restored later that day, I stopped checking the page.
WiiFM.
Wow, that Marc is sure selfish, right???
Maybe – but I don’t think I’m much different than other human beings.
The pull towards WiiFM is very strong.
It’s an important acronym to remember when you’re putting your message out into the marketplace.
People care most about themselves, and what your product or service will do for them.
They care less about your bio, your logo, your images or anything else.
It’s all about WiiFM.
Once you start operating with that in mind, you’ll find it a lot easier to attract people to you.
If your #1 concern at the moment is getting more coaching clients, there’s nothing wrong with that.
This can help you do it:
