The words you use when you talk to yourself, or with others, are more important than you might think.

I recently read “The Biggest Bluff” by Maria Konnikova, where the author details her attempt at going from being a poker newbie to the World Series of Poker champion in the span of just one year.

During a session with coach Jared Tendler (a past guest of my podcast and a great guy), she commented that she “hoped” she would be able to do something …

Before she continued, Jared called her on it (poker pun intended) and highlighted the danger of saying the word “hope” in that situation.

It’s a weak word, and sets the person up for failure before they’ve even attempted something.

Like another smart guy, Yoda, once said: “Do or do not, there is not try”.

Or Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right”.

It reminds me of all of the coaches who are now quivering in fear due to COVID-19, refusing to make any moves to grow their businesses because they’ve convinced themselves that nobody is buying during a global pandemic.
