HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

What coaches can learn from the “Fosbury Flop”

by | Feb 26, 2021 | Blog

This week I read James Altucher’s new book, “Skip The Line” (I highly recommend it) and I came across an interesting story:

Back in the 1960’s, there was a high jumper named Dick Fosbury who was pretty average at the sport.

He used to do the high jump just like everyone else – running straight towards the bar and jumping over it while moving forward.

But this method didn’t work for him. His legs were so long he constantly clipped the bar, reducing the height he could reach.

One day, he decided to do the exact opposite and jump over the bar backwards (which seemed like a wacko idea at the time … you can’t jump over the bar backwards?!?!!!)

But it worked like a charm, and he went from being a mediocre high school athlete to winning the gold medal at the 1968 Olympics shortly afterwards.

The “Fosbury Flop” is now the accepted method of doing the high jump and is used by all in the sport.

The point that Altucher makes with this story is you can shortcut the “10,000 Hour Rule” and save a lot of time and energy by finding alternate methods that work instead of banging your head against the wall the old way (he calls it the “10,000 Experiments Rule”)
