Many moons ago, back when I was in high school, I pumped gas at my local service station.
(It was a great gig for a kid to build up his work ethic – and nothing like working outside during February in Canada to toughen up).
I remember one summer day an RV pulled in to fill up.
The owner was 75 or so, and when he slowly came around to talk with me he held his back and grimaced.
“Never get old, kid” he said, aching from the long drive.
It’s funny what seemingly inconsequential conversations you remember years later, but I clearly remember that remark and thinking “I’ll never get old!”.
I was 16 or 17 then, and like all teenagers I couldn’t imagine myself as a senior citizen.
Well next month I turn 40. I’m not a senior citizen yet, but I’m now more than 1/2 way to the age of the fellow in the RV.
Truth is the 23 years since then have flown by quickly, and the cliche that “time flies” is true.
I don’t get hung up on milestone birthdays: turning 30 wasn’t a big deal for me, and 40 won’t be the end of the world either, but I have been thinking about time more often lately as I enter middle age.
