HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

The undrinkable bottle of champagne

On a recent mastermind call, one of the members shared a huge win with the group.

She smashed a goal that she set for her launch, and I said; “Make sure to treat yourself with something!”

I speak from experience – when I hit a goal, I tend to look for the next goalpost to reach and I don’t stop to celebrate and smell the roses.

A coach once pointed this out to me after I shared a big win with her. She asked; “So how are you going to reward yourself?” and I replied with something like; “Oh nothing’s planned – back to work for me!”

She stopped me and told me to do something to acknowledge my achievement: a nice dinner, buying something I had my eye on, or taking a day off to have some fun.

In her book “The Willpower Instinct”, Kelly McGonigal shared her own story around this topic:

Her boss gave her a bottle of champagne when she received a fellowship to attend graduate school. But she didn’t want to open it since she only got into grad school and hadn’t yet finished, so she carried that bottle around with her for five years and during several moves around the country.

Once she received her diploma, she finally opened it – but it was undrinkable by then. She writes; “As I poured it down the sink, I vowed to never let another bottle go to waste, or another milestone go uncelebrated”

If you’d like to practice your celebrations, the coaches in my Coaching Jungle Mastermind groups are achieving some great results to cheer about.
