In the course of sports history, there have been some incredible first games by rookies:

– Austen Matthews scored four goals in his first game for my Maples Leafs (I would have been happy with three!)

– Trevor Story hit two home runs in his first two at bats for the Colorado Rockies on Opening Day in 2016.

– Stephen Strasburg struck out 14 batters in his first career start.

– Wilt Chamberlain scored 43 points and 28 rebounds in his first NBA game.

These kinds of debuts are the exception, not the rule. Most new athletes struggle in their first year, or years. And many never figure it out at all.

The same goes for coaches.
