The other day I talked about the messed up up beliefs about money that people (even coaches and entrepreneurs) have.
On one hand, you hear those who have had negative talk instilled in them since childhood:
“Money is the root of all evil”
“Money can’t buy happiness”
“I’d rather be happy than rich”
“Money doesn’t grow on trees”
Those types of beliefs hurt, but the flip side is when someone puts money on an alter and treats it like a deity.
They chant in the mirror, write a thousand affirmations about it every day, and sacrifice goats to the money gods (ok, maybe not that far …)
For those types, I read something that Steve Chandler wrote about this worship in his book “Crazy Good”:
=====
“It would not be useful to try to force a positive belief in paint. To say an affirmation like ‘Oh, paint! Divine paint. Paint is the liquid manifestation of my expressive soul’.
What if you got yourself to believe that, and then you spilled a bucket of paint? Instead of just getting a new bucket of paint, you’d have to deal with watching the liquid manifestation of your expressive soul running all over the floor! That would take a long time to process. You would definitely have feelings around that.
So, therefore, just realize that money is only money. It can be useful to you without all the moaning, noise, tears and dreams about it …”
=====
Don’t get me wrong, I love the green stuff and have made no secret of it. I think anyone in business should feel good about money, set big goals, and avoid negative talk about it.
But you shouldn’t take it so seriously – stay loose, try new things, and have fun while you’re building your business and you’ll probably see more dollars fly into your bank account.
