I like to email my list at the same time every day.
For close to 1000 days, subscribers have seen me arrive in their inboxes at 7:30 am EST.
It’s been there through rain or shine, and on the rare occasion that I catch some sort of flu bug.
It’s been there if I’ve been stressed or happy, single or in a relationship, and whether my favourite sports teams won the night before or not.
But one day, my email didn’t arrive at its usual time.
About 20 minutes after it usually goes out, I started getting emails from people on my list asking why they didn’t get it that morning.
I logged into my email account, and saw a notice saying that the email was still “sending”.
“Hmmm, that’s weird” I thought, so I contacted Aweber to see what was going on.
They told me that it was a system-wide delay and they were working on fixing it.
The email did eventually go out, about three hours later than usual. In those few hours, I received even more emails from concerned subscribers.
Some were worried that I took them off my list, one asked if I was ok (she thought I must have been in a car accident or something major to not send my email), and one asked me if I was doing some kind of experiment to see how people would react by not getting the email.
At first I was surprised by the kerfuffle, but I shouldn’t have been.
When people are used to getting an email from you at the same time for years, you become a part of their lives.
They invest a few minutes of their precious time every day to reading what’s on your mind.
You’re with them while they have their morning coffee, or waiting for them after they put the kids to bed and have some time to relax and read.
When you email your list daily, you form a bond with your subscribers.
