I have trouble relaxing on the weekends.
I have a policy where I don’t book many calls on Saturdays and Sundays, so I can recharge my batteries.
But I’m used to being in “go-mode” all week, so once I get to the weekend I find it tough to let go of that.
I feel like I have to be working on my business all the time, and that if I slack off then that means I’m lazy (I know, I know – not a good way to look at things!)
I’m not the only person struggling with this issue – I’ve heard from a lot of coaches and entrepreneurs who have the same problem.
If you find yourself fidgety on the weekends (and on off-hours), I read something in a book recently that should help with that.
I recently read “The New Psycho-Cybernetics” (an update of the classic book by Maxwell Maltz), which discussed how over-motivation interferes with a person’s reasoning process.
The example given in the book is that people will take two or three times as long to learn a proper escape route from a burning building than they would from a building that wasn’t on fire.
It gives the brain science behind it, but basically when you’re trying too hard, you don’t think clearly, and you react poorly.
The same goes with business. If you’re “on” all the time, your results will suffer.
Keeping that in mind, one of my best friends is here from out of town this weekend, and we’re planning to paint the town red (or as much as a couple of 37 year olds can). Relaxation, laughs and maybe even some karaoke is on the agenda.
I hope you get to relax some this weekend too!
