Hi all you Natural Born Coaches,
This is not Marc.
Remember yesterday when Marc e-mailed you saying he was going to get out and blow off some steam? Well, he’s in the shower now getting ready and he foolishly left his laptop open on the kitchen table … I’m typing this on Saturday night 🙂
Let me introduce myself. ‘Hello, I’m David.’
I remember the first time I met Marc, I was an award-winning Yellow Pages sales rep and Marc was a wet-behind-the-ears real estate agent.
‘What you need to do,’ I explained ‘is show the public that you’ve set yourself apart from everyone else.’ All the ads in the Saint John, NB, yellow pages were for the brokerage offices themselves. There were no individual realtors stepping up and putting themselves in the spotlight.
Now this was a time before the internet had fully blossomed. If you searched ‘real estate agent’ on Google you’d get a bunch of results from California. A place like the yellow pages was THE place to be if you were trying to secure a local audience.
If you were a person who decided to sell your home, even if you knew WHO you wanted to call, you likely didn’t have their phone number. So that’s why Yellow Pages were so important at the time.
I didn’t realize that this first meeting would end up being the birthplace of a great friendship/co-coaching/co-mentoring/bouncing-ideas-off-each-other partnership.
Over the years I’ve seen Marc try and try again, sometimes reaching successes and sometimes not. All the while I went through my own successes and failures. What inspires me about Marc is his attitude of not giving up, that the right idea can be executed to achieve success.
This is true of everyone; you, me or Marc.
But why does it work out for some people and not others?
Well, let me share what I’ve observed.
I work with business owners who want to sell their businesses, “wantrapreneurs” who want to get into business while avoiding startup risk by buying an existing business and people who want to be involved with business via investing and making loans.
A lot of these people are well-intentioned. They really do have a dream and they spend hard-earned money with me to make sure they can execute properly. The problem is, many simply do not act. I’m not sure what holds them back.
I recently hosted one of my day-long workshops called ‘Business Buyer Advantage.’ One of the attendees swears he wants to buy a business. In speaking to him, I learned that he has a bookcase full of programs on real estate investing gathered over the years. He never once bought a rental property.
I’ve also had attendees of the same workshop go out and use the information I teach and buy a business within 90 days. They now work for themselves. SCREW THE MAN! You can hear their defiance in the wind as they curse their former corporate oppressors…
So which camp do you fit in?
Are you a coach? Are you going to be a coach? Or will you just play at wanting to be a coach until the next seductive notion passes by your consciousness?
Before Marc gets back, let me tell you that you can learn about buying and selling businesses, local investing and personal finance and buy any of my 4 best-selling business books at www.DavidCBarnett.com
Ok, here he comes… I need to pour another drink!
