Since I’ve been blabbering a lot about daily emails this week, I’ve talked with many coaches who are thinking of doing it.
The #1 objection that I’ve heard is a fear of offending people with the frequency of emails.
Earlier today I shared a story about Guy Kawasaki that showed how little people actually pay attention to what we’re doing. I heard another story from Mel Robbins in a column that she wrote for Success Magazine a few years back that can be very valuable to remember:
Remember the Anthony Weiner scandal (Weinergate)? Weiner was the New York congressman who was caught sending dirty pictures to women other than his wife over Twitter in 2011. For awhile it was the biggest new story around, and it seemed like everyone was talking about.
At the height of the scandal, Mel Robbins was in a cab in New York City, and she decided to make small talk with the cabbie.
“What do you think of the whole Anthony Weiner thing?” she asked.
“Who?” the driver asked her.
Right in the place where everything was going on, this cab driver (who talks to tons of people every day) didn’t know or care about Anthony Weiner. He was concerned with his own life and was probably more worried about paying the rent, or who his daughter was dating than a scandal involving a politician.
Robbins’ point was that people aren’t thinking about us 24/7, and I agree. They aren’t sitting around the dinner table talking about you and your business. If you let that thought hold you back, you’ll never do the things you need to do to break through.
Stop caring so much about what other people think – they’re not thinking about you nearly as often as you imagine!
