During a call with a client yesterday, we got talking about how much opportunity is out there nowadays.
Like me, my client is an optimist and has tons of plans for what he wants to do with his coaching business in the future.
Unfortunately, most people don’t have the same sunny outlook.
They complain of a lack of opportunities:
“There’s too much competition”,
“Ads are too expensive”,
“People won’t pay much for what I do”,
“If only I had this idea back ten years ago”
During the client call, I referenced Ray Kroc (the guy who made McDonald’s what it is today) …
I just finished reading Kroc’s book Grinding It Out, which was written back in 1977 but is just as relevant today.
Kroc was 52 years old when he met the McDonald’s brothers in 1954, and went into business with them selling their franchises (he was a milkshake mixer salesman, and his original plan was to help them expand so he could sell more mixers)
He went through hell to get McDonald’s off the ground, and continued on past the point when even the most determined of people would have called it quits.
And he did it all the old-fashioned way: No Internet – just a phone, pen, paper, and blood, sweat and tears while he was travelling the country trying to sell those franchises.
I said to my client: “Look at everything we have nowadays: access to billions of people around the world with a click of a keyboard, and social media networks where we can do business for FREE. Practically zero overhead. Imagine what Ray Kroc could have done with this!”
That put things in perspective.
We’re incredibly lucky (or spoiled) to be living and doing business in 2017.
I don’t know about you, but I’m grateful that I was born when I was. And I think that things will get even better for entrepreneurs in the coming decades.
The next time a pessimist tries to tell you that it’s a bad time to be in business, take a look at everything that you have at your fingertips …
