I once heard a story about PGA golfer Ian Woosnam that stuck with me:
Before he turned pro, Woosnam caught fire late in a tournament to pull off a big comeback win.
That night, some fellow golfers were having drinks in the clubhouse when they saw a set of lights on one of the holes way off in the distance.
Since the course had been dealing with vandalism at the time, the golfers (fueled by liquid courage) decided they would go out to the hole to confront the vandals and take care of the problem.
When they arrived, they found Woosnam practicing his putting – the lights were his parent’s car shining on the green to let him continue practicing in the dark.
His fellow golfers laughed and shook his hand while congratulating him for his win earlier in the day …
But when they got back into the light, they realized that their hands were wet. Not with water, or with beer, but with blood.
Woosnam had practiced so much after the tournament that his hands were literally bleeding!
This incident made one of the golfers realize that he didn’t have what it took to go pro, since he would never do what Woosnam did after winning a tournament.
In the coaching world, it’s important to work on our businesses and practice our craft in our off-hours too.
