A quick story about why perfectionism and podcasting don’t mix very well:
Shortly after I launched Natural Born Coaches, a friend sent me a message that went something like this:
“Hey Marc, I listened to your podcast and I really liked it! But I wanted to let you know that I could hear your breathing throughout the episode”
Apparently I wasn’t aware of how sensitive my Blue Yeti microphone was, and had it too close to my nostrils, so you could hear a whistling sound every time I breathed.
I sounded like Darth Vader.
Ooops.
The situation reminded me of the old episode of “The Simpsons”, when Ned was trying to pray in church but was distracted by a whistling sound coming from Homer’s nose next to him. Finally, he could take no more and shocked the congregation by standing up and yelling:
“Stop it! Breathe through your damn mouth!”
Although it was a rookie mistake, I didn’t dwell on it. I kept podcasting, and I got better in time.
But after almost 750 episodes I admit that I’m still not a perfect podcaster!
And that’s ok.
You should want to put the best possible product out into the marketplace, but if you strive for perfection you’ll drive yourself crazy.
It’s better to accept constructive criticism (not the arrows shot at you by the trolls), and seek to improve every day.
