Online’s Godzilla vs. Kong battle

by | Apr 14, 2021 | Blog

Last weekend my son and I went to see “Godzilla vs. Kong” at the local theatre.

Warning: if you plan on doing the same, prepare for your eardrums to be assaulted for two hours – mine were ringing all night (it reminded me of Michael Bay’s “Transformers” movies, which did the same to them …)

The film is about an epic battle between a giant sea monster with atomic breath and a 335 foot gorilla, but there’s another (admittedly less-deadly) battle happening in the online space now between supporters of two guys: Tim Ferriss and Gary Vaynerchuk.

Tim Ferriss is all about the four-hour workweek. You work smarter, not harder, and eliminate/delegate tasks so you can dip your toes in the sand with a cold drink instead of slaving away working 24/7.

Gary Vaynerchuk takes a different approach. He’s all about hustling and grinding it out every waking hour (his quotes include “Stop whining, start hustling” and “If you live for the weekends and vacations, your shit is broken”, which sums up his thoughts)

I’ve followed them both for years and I think they’re smart guys who make some good points – but I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid 100% for either of them.

I’m not on Team Ferriss, since I would go crazy working just a few hours a week (and I find he attracts a lot of the Get-Rich-Quick folks)

But with apologies to Gary Vee, I don’t want to work 125 hours every week. That’s a recipe for burnout, and he even admitted that he’s exhausted every day – which doesn’t sound like much fun.

I don’t have a dog in this fight.

If I had to choose, I’m closer to Gary Vee since I do work a lot, but I am drawn to some of Tim Ferriss’ stuff (once the world comes to its senses and opens up for travel, I’ll be on a plane).

My friend and frequent partner Tom Matzen has some interesting thoughts around this debate – he says that instead of going for balance, you need a different “architecture”.

He’s going to explain more during a live Masterclass he’s hosting next Monday at 3 pm EST. If you have an open mind, save your seat and join us by registering here:
