No half measures

I’m currently reading a great book called “10x Is Easier Than 2x”, written by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy.

The main idea in the book is it’s easier to achieve big goals (10x) than smaller (2x) ones, since there are plenty of ways to make incremental growth but fewer options when you’re going after the big stuff.

The lack of options means you cut out all of the tiny, inconsequential activities and use laser-focus to go all-in on a few things.

The authors write:

“There are no half-measures or half commitments with 10x. To achieve freedom of purpose, you must let go of everything that isn’t 10x in your life. This is hard because most of your time is likely caught up in 2x work …”

I first heard of the term “half measures” back when I watched one of my favourite series of all time, “Breaking Bad”.

In one memorable episode called “Half Measures” (season 3, episode 12), former cop Mike told the hero (or “anti-hero”) Walter White a story from his days on the force.

He took half measures when dealing with a husband who was beating up his wife, and his unwillingness to take strong action led to the wife being killed just a few weeks later.

Mike: “Moral of the story is I chose a half measure when I should have gone all the way. I’ll never make that mistake again. No more half measures, Walter”

Walter took the lesson to heart, and later in the episode he ran over two drug dealers who were about to kill his partner Jesse.

He wasn’t going to screw around, no half measures …

The same goes for coaching businesses, although that’s probably not as dramatic as running Walter White’s drug empire!

When I teach a coach a strategy that can dramatically increase their revenue, I don’t want to hear “sure, I guess I’ll try it out”, or ‘I’ll give it a go and see what happens”. That’s weak commitment, a half measure … they’re tying one arm behind their back before they even start.

I want to see the coach commit 100%, roll up their sleeves, take strong action, and not stop until they see the results.
