Unsubscribes used to, in the words of Peter Griffin, really “grind my gears”.
Now I don’t care.
Of course I want people to like me, but I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s not a realistic goal.
I think back to an email that I saw from Ryan Lee about unsubscribes way back in 2017:
=====
It’s funny.
Yesterday, I sent an email about our brand new personal development site, the grt network.
The entire site will be free. Yep.
PLUS…
To celebrate, I’m giving away a 3-4 day Royal Caribbean Cruise to one lucky person (and a guest!).
Again, for free (you can get the details here).
No fine details. No catch.
So, to recap for those keeping score at home.
I announced a free site and giving away a free cruise…
… YET, we still had people unsubscribe from my list yesterday.
Huh???
Which leads me to my point.
DO NOT be afraid to be in touch with your tribe. DO NOT fear the dreaded “unsubscribe”.
Because no matter what you give. No matter what you do. No matter what you say – you’ll get unsubscribes.
My email yesterday is living, breathing proof.
Heck, I’m giving away a cruise and people still said, “no thanks”.
And that’s fine. I’m 100% ok with it. And you must be ok with the unsubscribes too.
But whatever you do, you can’t take it personally. Otherwise it’ll drive you insane.
Simply smile and accept it.
It’s not a reflection of you. Maybe they were having a bad day. Or felt overwhelmed. Or maybe, as Ben Settle says, they are just “snowflakes”.
It happens. People go.
Here’s the thing.. if you never stop delivering the goods… there’s a great chance they’ll come back. It happens to me everyday.
Someone will unsubscribe, then hear me on a podcast a few months later. Or see a FB post.
And bam – they’re back.
I’ve been online for 17 years – and have never stopped.
Yesterday, I spoke to a good friend (who I interviewed for grt) and he mentioned how he got a regular column in Men’s Health magazine.
He said it took him about 11 years. And the reason he made it while so many of his colleagues didn’t, was because he never stopped.
And, right before that call, I interviewed another long-time friend for the grt network. We started in the fitness industry at the same time – and he just had an offer for 9-FIGURES to sell his business.
Again, he has never stopped giving (and yes, I’m sure he’s had thousands of unsubscribes over the years too!).
In 2017, your excuses end.
You WILL build a great tribe.
You WILL deliver great advice for your tribe.
And from now on.. you won’t stop. No matter who unsubscribes, you WILL keep going.
Forget hacks, tricks and gimmicks. In 2017 you will focus on being the best version of you. … and letting the world see how awesome you are.
You got this.
