One of my favourite baseball stories is the Savannah Bananas …
The Bananas are an exhibition baseball team led by Jesse Cole, and they have a unique way of playing baseball (think the Harlem Globetrotters, but on steroids).
They have pitchers who play on stilts, hitters who use flaming bats, comedic skits on the field, and more stuff designed to make baseball fun.
But my favourite Banana Ball rule is that if a fan catches a foul ball it counts as an out!
I saw an interview that Jesse Cole did where he explained how they came up with that rule …
He said they always brainstorm for ideas, and they thought it would be cool if a fan caught a foul ball that would count as an out, especially if it was the last out to win the game and then the fan would be treated as a hero out on the field – mobbed by the players and the media.
While it might seem uncommon that this would happen, there have been three game-winning foul ball catches by Bananas fans so far – of different ages, from kids to senior citizens!
The lesson that I take from this?
It’s important to try out lots of different ideas – not all will be winners, but if you try enough you’ll land on some that are home runs (pun intended).
