A few years back, I saw something I hoped to never see on my Macbook:
“The Spinning Beach Ball of Death”
This wheel is the multi-coloured one that shows up when your computer freezes, and it’s enough to make you want to throw it out the window or smash it to bits with a hammer.
I’d heard rumours about the beach ball and I had a few friends who had been defeated by it, but up to that point I managed to avoid it.
On one fateful Sunday I got to work uploading my new podcast episode that was going live the next morning (this was before my brother’s team handled my editing and uploading).
I was almost finished what I had to do, when that darn beach ball popped up.
I got to work Googling solutions on my phone, and tried absolutely everything imaginable to get my Macbook unfroze.
Flash forward to about 3 am, and I was still away messing with it (and yes, coming close to throwing it out the window or smashing it with a hammer).
I finally gave up and went to bed, deciding that the hassle wasn’t worth it and that I’d buy a new Macbook in the morning.
I bought a new computer the next morning and raced back home. I got my podcast episode up, although it was about 6 hours later than usual because of my beach ball issues.
What’s the point of this story?
Frustrations pop up in business and in life.
It’s not a question of “if”, but “when”.
When you get hit with these challenges, you can try to get through them on your own (like I tried by Googling solutions), or you can take other actions to get past them (like I did by investing in a new Macbook).
A lot of coaches are trying to figure everything out on their own, and in the process they’re getting overwhelmed and frustrated (and many quit).
