We usually hear that if you start something, you stick with it until it’s successful.
In theory, it sounds good.
“Hang in there!” … just like the poster with the little kitten hanging onto the clothesline says.
But there are times when it makes sense to change your direction.
I recently joined a membership community that someone I trust was starting. I’m in a higher-level group that he has, and I’ve gotten a ton of value from it and his stuff, so I went into this one (it was only a few dollars a month, so it was a no-brainer.).
But about a week or two after it opened, he decided to shut it down.
He was very open and upfront – it was a lot more headache than he wanted to deal with, and it wasn’t going to get any easier (it was already up to about 1000 members before he closed it.)
His logic was simple: it went against his business goals, and he didn’t want it to hurt the other stuff he was doing with clients.
It wasn’t a fit for his business, and he wasn’t going to keep it going just for the sake of it.
(another lesson: you’ll get more headaches the less that people pay!)
I had no issue with this decision – I respect someone who recognizes when something isn’t what he wants and changes direction quickly, instead of sticking with something just for the sake of it.
It’s a good lesson to learn, and one that I’ll remember going forward.
As I’ve mentioned, my revamped website is being launched in the coming days, and I’ve got some big plans for my business going forward – but each part has to fit my overall mission, or there’s no sense doing it.
It’s a good lesson to learn as you grow your business.
