One of my favourite entrepreneurial movies is “The Wolf of Wall Street”
The book is pretty good too …
While I wouldn’t recommend following all of Jordan Belfort’s moves in the business world, the movie has a number of memorable quotes and advice you can take from it.
Just last week I quoted something from the film during a coaching call with a client.
Throughout the session he kept throwing out excuses for why he couldn’t do certain things for his business. He had an excuse for everything!
Belfort’s quote that I gave him:
“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it”
(Another fun exercise, if you’re a sales coach, is to have your clients give their answer to the “Sell me this pen” challenge from the end of the movie)
Most people have a little voice in their heads throwing out reasons why they shouldn’t try something.
You can’t really blame that little voice, since it’s just trying to protect you from potential danger.
But it’s so cautious that if you give it too much power you’ll be stuck in neutral, getting increasingly frustrated and wondering why you aren’t making any progress on your goals.
