Howard Stern has a new book being released in May, and I recently pre-ordered it.
I’m going to dive into it on day #1.
No, I’m not planning on moonlighting as a radio shock jock … but I think entrepreneurs can learn from “The King Of All Media” and shouldn’t discount his advice because they may not agree with his brand of humour.
My favourite lesson from Stern came when a caller named Evan phoned into his show to offer “constructive criticism”.
Before Evan could say anything, Howard stopped him and told him it wasn’t necessary.
The caller was surprised, and tried to explain to Howard that his show was a community and he had to listen to all feedback.
Howard responded with:

“I don’t need any feedback. I come in here and I do what I want … what do I need your feedback for? … Through my entire career I didn’t ask people for their opinion of my show … I don’t worry about what you think of me”.

Although he has a couple sweet gigs at the moment, Howard would make a good coach (he’s been praised often for the questions he asks and for his ability to get his guests to open up).
In the online space, there are a lot of “Evans” floating around – not doing a lot with their own businesses or lives, but eager to share their feedback with others.
If you spend too much time listening to these folks (and people-pleasing) you’ll never grow a successful business.
