Champions think differently than the average person.
When Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, was preparing for the biggest fight of his young career (a shot at the world title held by the “unbeatable” Sonny Liston), the young challenger exuded total confidence and determination.
When asked about his chances against Liston, Ali responded:
“Maybe I can be beat .. I doubt it. But the man is going to have to knock me down and then I’ll get up and he’ll have to knock me down again and I’ll get up and he’ll have to knock me down and I’ll still get up. I’ve worked too hard and too long to get this chance. I’m gonna have to be killed before I lose, and I ain’t going to die easy”
(It sounds like that “Tubthumping” song: “I get knocked down, but I get up again, never gonna keep me down …”)
Building a coaching business isn’t the same as entering the ring against someone who can knock your head off, but it can still be pretty rough.
I prefer Ali’s attitude to a nonchalant one, where one enters the business with a “Well, I’ll give it a try and see how it goes” (as Yoda once said; “Do or do not, there is not try”).
When I’m talking with new and aspiring coaches, I paint a realistic picture of what it’s going to take to make it as a successful coach.
I don’t want them wearing rose coloured glasses. I want them to know what they’re getting into. This isn’t me being pessimistic, but I’m showing that it’s not going to always be all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows (like so many marketers are presenting it, with their magic “Make 7 figures in one month” funnels).
I try to repel the get rich quick people – the ones who want to win the world heavyweight title without putting in the blood, sweat and tears that it’ll take to get it.
