Last week I lost my voice.
That’s never good for someone who makes a living coaching, shooting videos for content and programs, and doing podcast interviews.
By last Wednesday, it was gone and I had to pretty much shut it down for the week (I did a few Facebook live interviews that were 10 or 15 minutes long, check them out if you want a good laugh at my expense)
Luckily, my voice is now back and I’m ready to roll.
A lot of coaches have lost their voices, just in a different way than you may think.
Sure, you can hear them when they speak, but their words aren’t really what they want to say.
They’re holding back out of fear of what others will think, or they’re mimicking whoever they think they should sound like.
I remember what happened after the Tony Robbins documentary I Am Not Your Guru was released on Netflix last year. Tony curses like a sailor in the film, and for weeks after it came out coaches were dropping F-bombs like it was going out of style.
(My language can get salty at times, but cursing 10 times in one social media post isn’t my style).
Those coaches saw Tony Robbins swearing, and they decided to do the same. They thought; “Hey, if it’s working for Tony then I should be doing it too!”
Copying others comes across phoney and isn’t going to help you get more clients.
Your coaching business will take off once you embrace your own voice, your own slang, your own ideas.
It could take some time. Think of your favourite television shows – when you go back and re-watch their first seasons, the characters usually sound different than the ones you know and love. Since the shows were just starting, they hadn’t found their voices yet (this is very noticeable with The Simpsons – the voices and the art in the first season is awful).
If you keep putting your content out there, you’ll discover your voice too.
It’s going to take consistency and accountability, and that’s what I provide in my 10 Clients In 90 Days group program.
I work with a select group of coaches (max six) to help them find their voice, and more coaching clients.
The next one opens up the week of September 11th.
