In my previous life before coaching, I was in an industry (real estate) where I was trapped in a local sandbox.
It was a small-ish market … not exactly New York City or Los Angeles.
Regardless of how good I was, I could never expand out of that market. I could never work with anyone who was more than 50 miles or so away from me.
I was at the whim of the local market conditions, too. If the economy took a hit, the pie that we agents ate from shrank.
One of the things that I’ve come to appreciate about having a coaching business is that I’m no longer trapped in a sandbox.
I can work with anyone in the world – as long as they have Internet access.
In fact, all of my clients are from away (most are in the US, but some are in places like the United Kingdom and Dubai).
More and more people are starting to realize that they don’t have to stay confined to their local area.
The Internet has opened things up. You’ve now got a marketplace of over 7 billion potential clients.
WARNING: should you try to escape the sandbox, you’ll have local people tell you: “You can’t make a living on the Internet!” …
They’re wrong.
I did it with my coaching business … my brother did it with his podcast editing business (he’s now turning away new clients since he’s booked solid) … my girlfriend is rocking and rolling with her new online business … and I have amazing clients who are making the leap and showing that it can be done.
I’m not saying that it’s easy, I’m just recommending that you look past your local area and take advantage of everything else that’s out there.
