Today is municipal election day in my neck of the woods.

Politicians’ signs and ads, with their beaming smiles and slogans, are plastered all over. You can’t go anywhere without seeing them.

In 2011, we had a federal election here in Canada. And something unexpected happened.

One of our national parties, the NDP, weren’t expected to do too much. They’d never come close to winning power.

So a bunch of people signed up to be candidates for the party, not expecting that they might actually win. They were merely placeholders, also known as “paper candidates.”

But during the election the NDP’s message caught on, and riding on the coattails of a popular leader, the party won a bunch of seats and finished in 2nd place.

So a lot of candidates who never expected to be elected ended up winning.

One of the candidates was a bartender who spent a lot of the campaign on vacation in Las Vegas, which she defended because it was “too late to get a refund.”

Viva Las Vegas!!!

This was a weird, rare situation.

Success in politics, or business, doesn’t happen by fluke.

When you’re building your business, you don’t have the luxury to be flying off to Las Vegas at critical moments or to be trying to emulate Tim Ferriss’ “Four-Hour Workweek”
