Here’s wishing my American friends a happy 4th of July!

Independence was a powerful motivator for the American revolutionaries, and it remains a powerful motivator 240 years later.

Independence from a job you don’t enjoy, independence from a relationship that’s no longer serving you, independence from playing small and not going after what you want.

Some of my clients have declared independence from their 9-to-5 jobs this year to become coaches, and in every case I had them declare a specific date that they’ll be fully-transitioned over.

Setting a date reinforces the goal, and I believe it makes it much more achievable than just saying “I want to leave my job some day.”

One of my clients set her “independence day” for September, and was able to leave in a few months ago (in May, four months early … that’s cause for celebration!)
