Despite popular opinion, you can build a successful online business “on the side”.
You don’t need 60, 80, or 100+ hours a week to make it work.
As I like to say:
You can build an online business part-time IF you put in full-time effort!
Given the choice, I’d bet on the entrepreneur who stays focused and productive for 20 or 30 hours a week instead of the unfocused one “working” 80 hours a week but who’s all over the place.
Many folks who brag about working 80 hours a week aren’t working nearly that much. If a camera was on them all day, I bet we’d see a lot of goofing around on social media, surfing YouTube, and playing Candy Crush or Farmville.
“But Marc, I don’t even have 20 or 30 hours a week … between work and family commitments I don’t have time to breath!”
For people with that excuse, I’ll give this example to show how much time they really have. In a typical week, they spend:
- 40 hours at their job.
- 5 hours commuting to that job
- 5 hours for lunch breaks
- 56 hours sleeping (if 8 hours a night)
- 7 hours for bathing/personal hygiene etc
That totals 113 hours.
Everyone has 168 hours/week, so that leaves 55 hours for a side business.
Even if you devote half of that extra time to family commitments (helping kids with homework and taking them to soccer practice, date night with the spouse, etc), you’re still left with over 27 hours to put towards your business.
You might have to get up early or stay up late, but the hours are there.
(I even went a little crazy with this example – I’d argue that you could sleep 6 or 7 hours a night and still be fine, but I’ll be conservative and go with 8 hours of sleep here)
A great way to build an online business without spending every hour working is with a Facebook group.
Done properly, you can use it as a profit center that gives you all the clients and customers that you need.
