Humans are, for the most part, short-sighted creatures.
They want everything now, and aren’t willing to wait for it.
I see it all the time in the coaching world. Sure, plenty of coaches will wait a few weeks or a few months for things to click, but they aren’t usually thinking out very far past that.
I recently read about a project called “Clock Of The Long Now”, which will construct a super-accurate clock to keep time for the next 10,000 years.
It’s not a quick and easy project. Jeff Bezos from Amazon is investing $42 million to build it 10,000 feet up in a mountain on land that he owns in West Texas.
You might think, why would anyone go through that much money and effort just to build a clock?
The problem with common every day clocks is they become inaccurate over time – as much as 90 seconds a day over time. And 90 seconds x 365 days x 10,000 years equals a big number that will make a calculator fizzle and explode …
The Clock Of The Long Now project is about more than just keeping accurate time. It’s also a way to promote long-term thinking, something that Bezos has become known for (he was one of the first entrepreneurs to recognize and capitalize on the possibilities of doing business online back in the Stone Age).
I’m not suggesting that you need to take a 10,000 year view of your business, but it doesn’t hurt to look a little ways down the road and think big.
