Attack of the price hagglers

The #1 excuse that people have for not hiring a coach is they don’t have the money to do it.

In my experience, that’s baloney.

They have the money, they’re just not prioritizing coaching. Instead, they’re choosing to bomb their livers poolside for a week somewhere warm, or they’re getting that fancy new flatscreen TV or other assorted toys.

The money excuse is dangerous because it keeps coaches from charging what they should be charging, and it becomes a tool for hagglers to fight you with.

Whenever I feel resistance to increasing my fees, I remember a story that one of my past podcast guests told me:

She decided to offer a “pay whatever you’d like” option for her coaching (something I wouldn’t recommend doing). One day, a client arrived to her house for the session with an expensive fur coat and loaded with fancy jewelry worth many thousands of dollars … when the session wrapped up, she threw $10 on the table for the coaching session!

Another story is from Sean D’Souza, in his book Sequential Pricing: The Magic of Sequences – And Why They Transform A Business:

Back around 2003, Sean had a client who was twisting his arm for a discount of $300. He gave in, and she was late for their next meeting. When he asked her why, she replied; “Oh, I had to get myself a car”. He asked her how much she paid for it, and she said “A little over $30,000” (that was back then – that same car would probably be over 40k nowadays).

Since she was able to spend that much on a car, she didn’t have to haggle for a few hundred bucks off his fees.

Stories like these drive me nuts, and they remind me why it’s so important to not let hagglers win.
