In August 1953, a young unknown singer named Elvis Presley walked into a small record studio in Memphis, Tennessee to record a few songs as a gift for his mother. He hadn’t gotten much recognition for his talent (he was picked on by other kids and told by some to “not quit his day job”), but Elvis didn’t care what others said. He loved music, was energized by performing, and had a desire to share his gift with others.
The owner of that studio, Sam Phillips, wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire either. With his Sun Records label, he had been fighting to introduce predominately African American music to white people, which wasn’t an easy task back during those days. But Phillips had a vision, and said; “Everyone knew that I was just a struggling cat down here trying to develop new and different artists, and get some freedom in music, and tap some resources and people that weren’t being tapped”.
We all know how the Elvis Presley story turned out. Phillips saw Elvis’ potential and helped him begin his journey which led to over 1 Billion record sales, 149 Top 100 songs, 18 #1 hits, and the undisputed title of “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”!
