When I reach out to someone, I make it a rule of thumb to have a reason for why I’m doing it.
It’s never just “hi, how are you?”
And it’s never a disguised sales pitch …
Sometimes it’s to see if there’s a match to work together or partner on something.
Sometimes it’s to congratulate them on an achievement or to tell them how much I liked a blog or a post that they put up.
But there’s always a reason.
I’m not a fan of the phrase “Let’s connect for a virtual coffee” or “I’d love to get to know you”.
I’m all for getting to know people, but I think there should be some reason for calls or you’ll be swamped with “getting to know people” on Zoom 24/7.
On that note, earlier this week I had a message from a complete stranger who connected with me on LinkedIn.
New connection: “Hey Marc, I hope you are having an amazing day despite the cooling weather outside. I love your coaching, and would like to ask you something about it, may I?
Marc: “Hi _, it’s going well here – re: the question, that depends … as long as it’s not a disguised sales pitch fire away”
New connection: (launches into sales pitch)
I chose the “Remove Connection” option, since this person clearly didn’t listen (or is using automated DM tools)
Oy …
