I love watching political debates, so a few nights ago I had my popcorn out for the first Republican debate of this election cycle.
When watching these things, I like seeing candidates who go with unscripted answers instead of robotic lines that were clearly rehearsed 100x in debate prep.
Ok, I get that pretty much everything is run through focus groups and practiced in advance of the debates (Kamala Harris had a “That Little Girl Was Me” t-shirt ready for sale immediately after the debate where she attempted to take down Joe Biden with that line, so it was obviously pre-planned), but I like something that’s at least somewhat out-of-the-box and entertaining.
By the way, my favourite zinger in a debate was when Ronald Reagan, fighting off attacks from opponents that he was too old when running against a much-younger Walter Mondale in 1984, answered a question about age from the moderator with:
“I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience”
(Sure it was rehearsed, but it killed Mondale’s chances and Reagan went on to win a landslide victory in that election)
Anyways, when I’m a guest on podcasts I like to keep it interesting and not play it too safe …
I like to say some things that others would be afraid to say in an interview, to keep it interesting for the audience.
There are millions of podcasts out there, and people are tired of the old, boring, paint-by-number answers.
