3 Reasons Why Coaches Don’t Niche

Most coaches that I talk with “get” the concept of niching down and (for the most part) support the notion.  I’m a fan of narrowing down your focus to better define your market – it eliminates much of your competition and I prefer it to being part of the noisy jungle of coaches who identify themselves in general terms (ie: “life coaches”, “business coaches”, “relationship coaches” etc … you get the idea).

Although coaches agree with the concept, and the need to niche down, most don’t. Why not?  I’ve identified three common things that coaches tell themselves that stops them from niching:

1) “I don’t want to lose potential clients!” – the coach thinks that by narrowing the focus, he/she is turning their backs on people who could become clients.

2) “I don’t want to do that niche for the rest of my life!” – coaches think that choosing a niche is the equivalent of signing a contract to sell their souls.  They’ll be doing this niche for the next 125 years and it’ll be carved into their tombstone for the rest of eternity!

3) “I don’t have a clue what my niche would be!” – it seems like such a large decision to choose a coaching niche and it can be an overwhelming process (without guidance).

I understand why coaches think of these things – heck, I thought the exact same thing before I niched down to only working with new and newer coaches.  But I promise you that each of these concerns are misguided, and that your business can be improved by choosing a niche.
