HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

Beware of those closest to you (cue the scary music …)

by | Nov 4, 2017 | Blog

Lately I’ve been watching a lot of a show called Fear Thy Neighbor (or as we Canadians would spell it, “Neighbour”)

I usually watch an episode before I go to bed, which may seem like a strange choice to settle down to since it’s about feuds between neighbours that usually turn into bloodshed.

But I enjoy it (and am grateful that I have no such worries about my neighbours).

It got me thinking about how important our relationships are with those closest to us.

Our relationships may not turn into crazy situations like those on FTN, but even a few words from a loved one can wreak havoc on your mindset and on your business.

I recently recorded a podcast interview with Nicholas Bayerle (from The Billion Dollar Body), and he told me that when he was younger he wanted to be the best Motocross rider out there.

After telling his father about this dream, he shot back; “You’ll never be the best”.

That one comment sent Nicholas into a tailspin. He gained a bunch of weight and went into a funk.

Luckily he rebounded and is rocking it in business today, but one quick comment from many years ago can have a lasting effect.

I’ve heard stories like this time and time again. Entrepreneurs share their hopes and dreams with someone close to them (usually someone who’s stuck at a 9-5 j-o-b that they hate) and they shoot them down.

It may not seem like a big deal at the time, but snide comments and insults from non-entrepreneur friends and family members can have a devastating impact on your ambitions.

My suggestion?

Cut those people out of your life. Swiftly and mercilessly!

It may seem harsh, but building a business is tough enough without having someone close to you pulling you down.

It’s like Jim Rohn said: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”.

Have a good look this weekend at who you’re around most, and trim as needed …
