Earlier this week, I noticed that I was at the 5000 friends limit on Facebook, and I had a few hundred friend requests sitting there unanswered.
So I put a post up, encouraging people to unfriend me if my message didn’t resonate with them.
I had one person call me “arrogant” for this, and others questioning the “strategy”, but I’ll tell you why I did it.
(It had nothing to do with “strategy”)
It just makes common sense to not be connected with people I never talk to, or who aren’t getting anything from what I’m posting.
It’s smart business to repel people who don’t resonate with you.
I had about 30 people take me up on my offer to unfriend me that day, and there’s no hard feelings. It’s a good move for both them and me to move on.
Earlier this year, I did a purge of my Facebook and unfriended roughly 1000 people. This was a time-consuming process (Facebook doesn’t make it easy to do it), and when I was going through my list I realized something:
There were a ton of people who shouldn’t have been on there!
I hadn’t talked with a number of them since we connected back five years ago (or even longer).
And a bunch of them were deceased, and had Facebook tribute pages set up.
It made no sense for us to be connected, and after I dropped those 1000 people and carefully added 1000 new folks, I noticed a huge spike in my engagement (and it definitely helped my business).
Don’t try to appeal to everyone – chase the people who are a bad fit away, and connect with those who are better matches for you and your business.
That’s the way to do it.
