I read about an 8 page memo for the aides who have to drive around a politician in Indiana running for the Senate.
His name is Todd Rokita, and he sounds like a pretty demanding fellow. The drivers are expected to:
– transport Rokita’s toothbrush and toothpaste, and also carry around a 20 item supply box called “the football” (it includes gum, hand sanitizer, business cards, bottled water, napkins and Kleenex, lozenges, a stapler and stapler remover, Post-it notes and Shout wipes, among other items)
– never let Rokita be photographed with a drink in his hand.
– remind him to bring his phone and wallet everywhere.
– not talk with Rokita or distract him with unnecessary chit chat.
– have a cup of black coffee ready for him when picking him up at his house, empty the trash, and back the vehicle out of the garage and turn it around so they can drive out of the driveway when Rokita gets in the car,
– notify Rokita of any turns and sudden stops while driving.
(there’s a lot more, but I won’t bore you with the details)
As a coach, you can get demanding clients too if you’re not careful.
Some will try to dictate when and how the coaching sessions take place, contact you at all hours and expect an immediate response, and message you for things that could easily be Googled. You’ll be run off your feet catering to their every whim.
When I started my business, I made sure I wouldn’t take these types of clients on. In fact, I set up five criteria that I judge all potential clients by. My ideal client:
1) Is an action-taker
2) Wants to make a big impact
3) Is coachable and respects boundaries
4) Is fun to work with
5) Pays me on time and what I’m worth
If you don’t have criteria set up for who you’ll work with, take a few minutes to write yours down.
Remember, you’re a coach – not a butler.
