Last weekend, Julia and I got to our local casino for a few hours to have a bite to eat and then play some games.
She did ok on the trip, but I didn’t fare as well (that darn Betty White slot machine kicked my behind – you can’t win ’em all).
Before leaving, we went to the back of the casino for her to redeem her slip and collect her winnings. Casinos are very smart when it comes to this stuff. They’re designed to separate as much money from you as possible while you’re there. Here are some of their tricks:
– You won’t see clocks on casino walls (they don’t want you to look up, see the time and think “oh shoot, I promised my spouse I’d get groceries. I better run!”
– You usually don’t see windows to the outside world (for the same reason as above)
– The most profitable casinos have lower ceilings, since high ceilings make people feel self-conscious about gambling and uncomfortable being more exposed.
– They purposely make you get your winnings as far away from the front entrance as possible so it’s more difficult to escape with that money. As we were leaving, we had to zig zag around a maze of slot machines and games to get out of there. If it were a straight line to the exit, our escape would be easier.
There’s a thing or two coaches can learn from this last point …
It’s not enough to put just a little bit of content out into the marketplace and hope people see it. The online world is too busy, there’s a good chance that not many saw what you released.
You have to put so much out there that they can’t escape you. They can’t avoid seeing your name and your message, even if they tried. They can try to avoid your clutches, but they’ll eventually succumb and check you out.
Act like a casino, and make it tempting (and near impossible) for people to ignore you. Do that, and you’re golden.
