Last weekend, Julia and I took the kids to an outdoor market (it was so windy that a tent blew over and smacked me in the head, but I’ll save that story for another time).
While there, the kids got a couple of balloon animals. Hannah got an octopus, and Gray got a dog …
They played with those animals the rest of the day, but when we woke up the next morning we saw that Gray’s dog had a severely deflated, shrunken head.
The next day, the balloon dog’s body started to shrink as well. It wasn’t as sudden as the head, but it was noticeable.
Pretty soon, he was gone:

What happened with my son’s balloon dog reminds me of a lot of coaches out there.
They jump into the business in high spirits, and they’re excited thinking of everything they’ll do out there.
But after they get hit with some resistance, and the inevitable challenges that come with growing any business, their confidence starts to deflate.
You see it in their faces. Their energy level drops, their enthusiasm to do the work isn’t the same.
They become less active on social media.
They get quiet and stop getting out there as much.
They start to wonder “Why am I doing this?”
By then they have one foot out the door, and a lot of them quit before their businesses can get rolling.
I hate to see this happen to coaches.
I couldn’t do much about my son’s balloon animal, but I can do something about the deflated confidence of coaches.
