I was reading something in Ben Settle’s Selling From The Trenches recently about “Gamesmanship”.
Gamesmanship is when someone distracts another person or uses psychological intimidation to throw a competitor off his game.
“Head games” is another word for it.
You see it in golf, when your playing partner makes a snide comment about your drive that went 50 yards too far left into the woods and killed a deer, or about your putt that ended up further away from the hole than when you began.
Or in baseball, when the catches whispers to the batter between pitches (ie: “Your swing is looking a little slower than usual?”)
Anyways, in the book Ben was talking about how this kind of thing happens a lot in business too, and how you have to keep it from rattling you.
I agree. In the online coaching world, it’s definitely there.
I’ve noticed some of the same coaches popping up on my posts lately making snide little comments disguised as “helpful advice”.
I’m all for opposing viewpoints – debate can be good to open up your mind and have it stretched by new ideas.
But when I see the same people going out of their way to comment negatively on most of my posts, I can see the gamesmanship at play.
I don’t get too worked up about some Facebook comments anymore – I’m too busy “doing my thing”. I just smile to myself and move on.
One of the things that I love about my 10 Clients In 90 Days group program is the coaches there view themselves as a team, and they aren’t playing head games with each other.
Whenever one of them gets a new client, the others congratulate and ask questions to learn about the experience – they don’t make passive aggressive comments to knock them down a peg.
It’s important to be supported by a team when you’re on this coaching journey, and not have people whispering negative nothings into your ear.
