HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

Wise words from Maxwell Maltz

by | Jun 13, 2026 | Blog

I just re-read “The New Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz (updated by Dan Kennedy from the 1960 classic), and I took a bunch of stuff from it.

I won’t share all of the passages that I highlighted in it, but here are a few of the big ones …

The author(s) wrote:

“In sports, it’s said, ‘You can’t win by playing not to lose.’ In life, even in every day situations, we might say the same. In fact, playing not to lose only serves to manufacture and magnify stress, thus increasing the likelihood of making mistakes, not vice versa”

I agree 100% with this and have seen it in practice. It’s easy to shrink and not make bold moves thinking that will keep you safe, but that won’t lead to success. You have to play to win – remember the quote; “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars” as it’s applicable here!

Another highlighted passage:

“Strangely enough, I learned as much from my failures as from my successes, if not more”

I agree with this too. If life was easy and everything we did worked out 100% of the time that wouldn’t lead to growth (and it’d be pretty boring!). I’ve learned more from my failures than from my wins …

Finally, re: holding onto regret from your past mistakes:

“Look forward, not backward. Develop a ‘nostalgia for the future’ instead of for the past. The nostalgia for the future can keep you youthful”

The past is the past and it’s over and done with. Spend more time looking at the road ahead instead of focusing on the rear view mirror!
