A quote from Jeffrey Bezos:
“All overnight success takes about 10 years”
Not to knock a guy who’s done ok for himself (net worth of almost $200 Billion), but the quote isn’t exactly true.
Take the Pet Rock fad that hit in the 1970’s.
Inventor Gary Dahl was having some brewskis with friends at the bar and listening to them complain about how frustrated they were with owning pets – with their habit of destroying furniture, having to pick up their poop, obligations to feed them, give them exercise, etc.
Dahl jokingly bragged that he didn’t have to deal with any of that, since he had a “pet rock”.
They all laughed at the joke, but he decided to explore it further and wrote an owner’s manual for his pet rock, with tongue-in-cheek instructions on how to care for it and tricks it could perform (including “playing dead”).
He put his “Pet Rocks” up for sale for $3.95 and over a million of them quickly sold, making Dahl a millionaire and an overnight success (take that Bezos!)
I like to keep things fun and interesting inside every issue of my Secret Coach Club hard copy newsletter, so in the April one I’ll be diving into Pet Rocks and the marketing brilliance of Dahl …
But there’s a lot more packed into it, including: why coaches can’t afford to put all of their eggs in one basket, how to push your message out into the world fearlessly and without hesitation or apology, how to use the power of stories to fatten your wallet, how to spice up your copy (and sales) by using numbers in your content, and two little-known tricks to get booked to be a guest on 100+ podcasts every year without having to spend a penny.
It heads to the printer soon, so rush over before the deadline of midnight tonight:
