3 rules for aspiring jazz players (and coaches)

by | Sep 18, 2021 | Blog

In “The System Club Letters”, Ken McCarthy talks about how master marketers can learn from Jazz musicians.

In Jazz, there are three rules for aspiring players:

1) Find your own voice
2) Never play a tune the same way twice
3) Know the basics inside and out

It’s ok to have people who you follow, and who inspire you. But don’t fall into the trap of sounding like a clone of that person …

The world already has a Tony Robbins, a Brendon Burchard, a Marie Forleo and a Les Brown. It doesn’t have anyone else like you.

I have a weird/dry sense of humour, a Canadian accent (according to my American and international clients – I don’t hear it?), and I like throwing pop culture references into my stuff.

I use salty language at times, but I’m not dropping F-bombs every 2nd word (it’d sound silly with me doing that).

But you know what? It works for me …

Use your real voice when you’re putting your stuff out into the world.
