Back in 1986, everyone was talking about a vault.
That was the year that Geraldo Rivera hosted a TV special around the opening of Al Capone’s vault that was discovered (along with secret rooms and escape tunnels) in his former headquarters at the Lexington Hotel in Chicago.
30 million people tuned in to find out what would be discovered inside the gangster’s vault:
Cash?
Gold?
Diamonds?
Bodies?
Unfortunately it was a huge letdown, since all that was found were some old bottles and dirt …
The dejected host admitted that immediately afterwards he went across the street to a bar and drowned his sorrows in tequila!
(But it wasn’t a complete failure – the ratings were bigger than the Super Bowl and it remains the highest syndicated TV special in history …)
